Every now and then the stars align and a new motorcycle farkle is born that is both affordable and useful. The Helmet Hook is one of those farkles.

Construction

The Helmet Hook is a piece of heavy duty plastic molded into the shape of a hook. It has a ring at the top with an optional metal washer insert. Your handlebars and bar ends will determine whether or not you will need the washer insert.

The hook portion has been drilled to allow for a small optional padlock in case you want to lock your helmet.

Installation

The Helmet Hook will fit pretty much any handlebar. I have installed it on my 2002 Yamaha FZ1, 2004 Kawasaki KLR650 with handguards, and my 2006 Yamaha FJR1300.

It only takes a couple of minutes to install the hook. Just remove your bar ends or handguards and slip the hook in between and replace the screws. The hook can be oriented to face towards the bike or away from it. I usually face mine away from the bike to allow for maximum hand clearance, but how you do it is all personal preference. The Helmet Hook doesn’t care either way.

Experience

There really isn't much to say. It’s a hook for your helmet and it just works. I place the metal D-Rings from my helmet strap into the hook and let it hang. If you intend to lock your helmet I would suggest buying the lock when you purchase your Helmet Hook. You will need a small lock with a long lock shank. Save yourself multiple trips to the hardware store and just add it to your order.

Improvements

Some helmet D-rings are smaller than others. On my Shoei X-Eleven I could get both D-Rings on the hook, but when I took it off they were scraping the hook. It might be a good improvement to make the hook part a little narrower. Not much, maybe 1/8 of an inch. With that being said, it would be easy to modify the hook with a file, dremel tool, or small saw.

Conclusion

It’s really quite nice to know my helmet isn't going to plummet to the ground. These days helmets can be pricey and one good drop could be very costly. Considering that the Helmet Hook is only $15.95 and the optional pad lock is only $2.55 I think it’s a wise investment. The fact that it is unobtrusive on the handlebars makes it even better.
