Summary
The Aeromoto Sport leather jacket is a great value. The quality was better than expected at this price point and the jacket performed very well. The styling of this jacket is at home in the saddle, commuting to work, or hanging out down town.
Introduction
Aeromoto is a house brand for Competition Accessories. They are using the Aeromoto brand to market their new line of sport riding gear. Their other house brands are Sliders and Shadow.
Feel and Sizing
When I unboxed the Aeromoto Sport leather jacket the first thing that surprised me was the quality of leather. This jacket sells for $199.99 on the Competition Accessories web site. It wasn’t quite as buttery as my Alpinestars GP-R leather jacket, but the Aeromoto Sport leather jacket is less than half the cost of the Alpinestars. The leather is about the same thickness as my Alpinestars and after a day of riding the Aeromoto has broken in nicely.
The Aeromoto Sport leather jacket has what I would call a casual sport cut. There is a little room in the shoulders and chest area, but not too much. I normally wear a size 43.5 in a suit jacket and the Aeromoto size 44 was just right.The arms are pre-curved, but not so much that it would be uncomfortable to wear while off the bike. In contrast, my Alpinestars has a more aggressive cut and can become tiring to wear for too long off the bike.
I am not a very tall person. I am about 5’10”. I find that motorcycle gear usually has sleeves and pant legs that are too long for me unless there is a short version available. With the Aeromoto Sport leather jacket the sleeves were a little bit too long, but after the jacket was broken in I had no problems with the sleeve length. I wore the Aeromoto jacket all day and the sleeve length never even crossed my mind.
Construction
The Aeromoto Sport leather jacket is available in solid or perforated leather. Each leather style is available in plain black, silver leather detailing, and red leather detailing.
The construction of the Aeromoto Sport leather jacket is surprisingly good. I have seen some other store brands out there, and when you compare them to the more premium products on the market you can really see where the quality was cut. With the Aeromoto Sport leather jacket I did not see any obvious corners that were cut. All the main seams are triple stitched and the zippers are YKK zippers. In some of the other entry level offerings I mentioned earlier the place where I saw the most difference was in the waist connector for the pants. On brands like Alpinestars and Dainese these stretchy materials with zippers on them are very sturdy. In some of the other store brands I have seen, this area looked like it could fall apart before you made it to the car. I figured that would be the place I could really see what the Aeromoto jacket was made of. To my surprise, the jacket was very well made in this area. For a jacket in the $200 range the construction is excellent.
Protection
The Aeromoto Sport leather jacket has removable CE approved armor in the shoulders and elbows. The armor was comfortable and felt well placed during our ride. It also includes a removable 10mm foam back pad. If you will be mating your jacket to your pants the Aeromoto includes two zippers. You have a full 360 degree zipper and a shorter zipper in the middle. I did not take advantage of the waist connection zippers on our ride.
Comfort
The Aeromoto Sport leather jacket has a permanent mesh liner sewn in to prevent the leather from chaffing your skin and the moisture wicking neoprene collar was very comfortable all day. Our ride was partly sunny and overcast and temperatures ranged from 46-64 degrees F. I wore a long sleeve t-shirt and left the quilted vest liner in place. I am somewhat tolerant of cold temps, but keep in mind; I live in the southeast so these temps feel cool to me. I was comfortable all day. I did get chilled a couple of times, but overall I was warm enough. I would suggest another insulating layer if you are using this jacket any colder than 50 degrees F.
Pockets
The Aeromoto has a good pocket configuration. There are two pockets on the inside attached to the permanent mesh liner. These pockets include one zippered pocket and a cell phone or small device pocket. The small device pocket is just a little on the small side. Today’s larger smartphones may not fit. However, the zippered pocket should be fine for a cell phone. The quilted vest liner has one pocket that is not zippered and there are two zippered hand warmer pockets on the front.
What Could Be Improved
I could only think of a few minor things I would change about the Aeromoto Sport leather jacket. One thing I noticed when we were riding in the cooler temperatures was the air around my neck. The collar is kind of a mandarin collar style. The addition of a snap or small flap to bridge the small opening in the middle of the collar would keep some of the cold air out.
I would also like to see some waist adjusters added. I was riding two up with my wife on the back of my Yamaha FJR1300. If I stood up to adjust, the jacket would ride up a little bit when my wife’s knees caught it as I was sitting back down. I think the addition of waist adjusters would help keep the jacket in place. An alternate solution would be to utilize the zippers for the pants connection that are already on the jacket.
The last thing I could think of is the pocket configuration on the quilted liner. It would be nice to maintain the same pockets on the quilted liner as you have on the permanent mesh liner.
These suggestions are a bit picky and in the grand scheme of things they are not that big of a deal, but they would be welcome tweaks to the design of the jacket.
Final Opinion
The Aeromoto Sport leather jacket is a bargain. The quality of this jacket easily justifies its price at $199.99. This jacket was broken in after just one day of riding and it was comfortable all day long. In the summer the non-perforated jacket would be a little too hot to wear, but with the right layers underneath it could carry you from early spring to summer and early fall to winter. Depending on your tolerance for cold, it may even carry you through winter. I do like my Alpinestars jacket, but when it comes to commuting or riding somewhere to hang out with friends it does stand out. Walking downtown with friends in a jacket with logos all over it is not always the look you are going for. The Aeromoto Sport leather jacket allows me an option to ride in a comfortable protective jacket and have a more classic style once I get there. If you are looking for a new leather jacket that provides a lot of bang for your buck, you can’t go wrong with the Aeromoto Sport leather jacket from Competition Accessories.
