U.S. Route 1 in Maine – Motorcycle Road with Striking Scenic Views
Often neglected yet uniquely defined, the state of Maine offers motorcyclists and other travelers an experience that just cannot be felt anywhere else in the country. Tucked quietly in the most Northeastern corner of the country, the area is best known for its lobster and national forestry. You can have it all, too, because the U.S. Route 1 in Maine serves as an artery through the state's Eastern region. Though it's best to ride the Route 1 in its entirety spread out over a few days, you can easily turn the trip into a week-long affair.
Although the U.S. Route 1 connects major communities of Maine, such as Portland, Brunswick, Belfast and Houlton, the most scenic portion of the highway runs along the ocean. This stretch of Route 1 is often referred to as the Coastal Route, and it's become an absolute dream for motorcyclists to travel for quite some time. Riders will travel through such notable areas as Arcadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain, offering travelers several lodging opportunities along the way. From tree-covered, two-lane roads to wide open, mountainous curves, you'll experience Maine in its natural habitat through the Coastal Route Highway. This stretch of U.S. Route 1 is arguably the most beautiful and exhilarating ride of them all, and once you visit, you'll understand why.
Well-traveled riders might recognize the U.S. Route 1 name from other parts of the country, as it’s pretty unforgettable to name your highway system with the number one. This same stretch of road that’s found in the most remote locations of Eastern Maine can be traced all the way back to U.S. Route 1 in Key West, Florida. They are one in the same, and riders with enough free time and experience may report to the call of the open road and travel its entire duration. U.S. Route 1 certainly offers riders the most culture out of any other roads on the East Coast, but the stretch of this highway in Maine may just be some of the most natural and beautiful roads in all of the Eastern United States.
Riders will feel most comfortable if they pack light to medium jackets for their ride along U.S. Route 1. Because the highway ends, or rather continues on, through Canada, it should be known that fall and winter months can become rather chilly very quickly. River Road's Mesa Leather jacket keeps you warm and looking stylish, no matter how cold those Maine nights can get. While night rides are certainly enjoyable, too, you'll want to save your U.S. Route 1 travels for the daylight hours. There's simply too much atmosphere than can be missed when riding at night on this stretch of highway.
The purpose of U.S. Route 1 in Maine is not always how fast you can get there, no matter if you're riding a Ducati 1199 Panigale or a Harley Davidson Sportster. No, this is Maine, and it's best enjoyed if you soak in the environment as long as you can. Stop along the route to experience all of the local offerings, because it doesn't get more American than this.
